Your Roku remote isn't working. Try these steps.

For: Roku players, sticks and Roku TVs

Last checked October 14, 2026 against official help from Roku. Written for Roku simple and voice remotes.

A Roku remote usually comes back with fresh batteries or a quick restart. Try these in order.

This page is for you if

  • Nothing happens when you press buttons
  • The buttons are slow or only work sometimes
  • The volume or power button doesn't work

Good to know first

If your remote has a microphone or magnifying glass button, it's a voice remote. If not, it's a simple remote and must point straight at the Roku.

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Clear the path

For a simple remote, make sure nothing blocks the front of the Roku. Try pointing from a different angle.

  2. Step 2: Put in fresh batteries

Take out the old batteries. Press any two buttons. Put in a new matching pair, negative end first.

  3. Step 3: Restart the Roku

Unplug the Roku from power. Wait 5 seconds. Plug it back in and wait for the Home screen.

  4. Step 4: Pair the remote again

Restart the Roku. If the remote has a pairing button, hold it for 5 seconds until the light flashes. If not, hold Back and Home for 5 seconds. Wait for the pairing message on the TV.

Is the remote hot?

  • Stop using it right away. Don't touch the batteries.
  • Set it on a hard surface that won't burn, like tile, and let it cool.
  • Contact Roku support if it doesn't cool down.

Good to know

  • While you sort it out, the Roku mobile app can work as a remote.
  • If only the volume button fails, point the remote straight at the TV. Roku's page explains the TV setting (CEC) that may need to be on.

Check it with the source

We wrote these steps from these official pages. If your screen looks different, the official page is always right.
